I went out walking at first.

I thought I could cross Texas on foot. I carried a backpack and a 4×5 camera, believing that if I walked slowly enough I could go right across the state.

After a few days, the journey ended.

So I compromised the dream and started driving.

I traveled through Texas looking for what I thought I should find. I wanted was to get out of my own way — to see as though I had forgotten what I knew.
